Background:  Radon is a colorless, odorless, naturally occurring radioactive gas that is the second leading cause of lung cancer deaths in the United States.  One in fifteen homes across the United States has an elevated level of radon and the only way to determine if a home has elevated radon levels is to perform a simple and inexpensive test.

Reason for Recommendation:  A recent survey in South Lake Tahoe showed that radon is present at elevated levels in about 55% of the homes tested.  Environmental Management supports radon awareness education that informs the public about the dangers of radon and what can be done to minimize the health risk from exposure to elevated levels of indoor radon.

Action to be taken following Board approval:  Forward Resolution to Department.
