Background: The Mosquito and Vector Control Association of California has proclaimed the week of April 21 through April 25, 2008 as "West Nile Virus and Mosquito and Vector Control Awareness Week" in the State of California.
Reason for Recommendation: West Nile Virus is a mosquito-borne disease that can result in debilitating cases of meningitis, encephalitis and death to humans, horses, avian species and other wildlife. In 2007, West Nile Virus resulted in 16 deaths in California and sickened over 379 others. According to experts, West Nile Virus will again pose a public health threat in California in 2008. A West Nile Virus outbreak in our state threatens public health and possibly California’s tourism.
By recognizing this week, the County will increase public awareness regarding the threat of the West Nile Virus and encourage county residents to eliminate mosquito-breeding sites on their property and implement necessary precautions when mosquito activity is high. The Environmental Management Department would like to recognize the heightened public service provided by the mosquito control districts and the environmental and public health professional staff that work year-round to control mosquitoes and enhance public awareness to prevent disease and allow Californians to enjoy the outdoors.
