Background: Per Board of Supervisors policy B-10, each year the Chief Administrative Office arranges for the publication and distribution of the Grand Jury Final Report and all county and other public agency responses in a tabloid form in local newspapers. Depending on the size of the Grand Jury Final Report and subsequent responses, the tabloid runs anywhere from 30 to 40 pages of newsprint. It circulates one time with the regular newspaper and is provided to most newspaper subscribers and in newspaper rack locations. Last year's publication cost was $6878.00.

Reason for Recommendation: In order to more widely publicize the work of the Grand Jury and responding agencies, Chief Administrative Office staff and the Grand Jury would like the opportunity to consider alternatives to tabloid publication. The goal of this alternative is to advertise the work of the Grand Jury and responding agencies to a wider audience over a longer period of time. For approximately the same cost as the conventional tabloid, the county could place display several advertisements in local publications announcing the availability of the report, as well as options for obtaining a copy such as the Grand Jury website and county libraries.
