Fiscal Impact/Change to Net County Cost: None. The Sheriff routinely budgets for this service in his annual operating budget.
Background: Whenever the Coroner deals with a homicide, a suspicious death or a death from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), an autopsy must be conducted by a certified forensic pathologist in order to have credible evidence for a court proceeding or to comply with state protocols. There are no certified forensic pathologists in El Dorado County and the Sheriff's Office has historically contracted with Sacramento County for these services.
Reason for Recommendation: The current contract with Sacramento County expired on June 30, 2008. Sheriff staff submitted the request for a successor contract on 3/29/08, but experienced delays in obtaining the signatures from the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors, making this agreement retroactive. A resolution from Sacramento County dated November 18, 2008 is included indicating approval by the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors.
Action to be taken following Board approval: The Chair will sign the agreement.
