DEPARTMENT RECOMMENDATION:
The Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) recommending the Board authorize the Chair to sign a Proclamation to recognize April 15 - 21, 2018 as National Volunteer Week, and to formally thank those who volunteer their time and energy to support and improve our community.

The support provided by volunteers in HHSA often allows HHSA to enhance services, and in some cases makes possible programs or services that would otherwise not be available. Volunteers frequently have a profound impact on the lives of those receiving services, and their support is greatly appreciated and valued.

DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND:
National Volunteer Week is an annual celebration observed in the United States to promote and show appreciation for volunteerism. In 1974, President Richard Nixon first established National Volunteer Week via Presidential Proclamation 4288, and every sitting U.S. President since that time has issued a proclamation during National Volunteer Week to recognize and celebrate the efforts of volunteers.

More than 600 volunteers in HHSA provide vital support to many Agency programs. Volunteer service in HHSA is provided across a wide spectrum of programs, and volunteers offer their assistance and skills by performing multiple services such as congregate and home delivered meal service to seniors, exercising and socializing shelter animals, assisting at the Behavioral Health Wellness Center, checking on the welfare of seniors living alone, assisting with flu clinics, receiving complaints regarding long term care facilities, and providing entertainm...
