Background: Justice Assistance Grants are a funding source that blends the previous Edward Byrne formula and Local Law Enforcement Block Grant Programs (LLEBG) to provide agencies with the flexibility to prioritize and place justice funds where they are needed most. Funds must be used to supplement existing funds and cannot replace, or supplant, non-federal funds appropriated for the same purpose.

On May 5, 2009 (agenda file 09-0528), the Board approved a request to apply for a 2009 JAG solicitation associated with the Recovery Act of 2009 (Stimulus) in the amount of $153,888. That grant application has been submitted. Since that time another 2009 JAG soliciation in the amount of $37,437 has been announced which is similar to those that the County has applied for in the past. In prior years the County has received between $12K and $30K which has provided technology programs in the District Attorney's office and has been used to offset costs associated with outstanding warrant efforts in the District Attorney, Probation and Sheriff's offices.

Reason for Recommendation: The Chief Administrative Office will work with staff in the Sheriff's Department, Probation and the District Attorney's office to determine how best to utilize these grant funds. The deadline to submit the application for this solicitation is July 9, 2009.

Action to be taken following Board approval: A project will be identified and the application will be submitted by the July 9, 2009 deadline.
