Background:
At the meeting of March 2, 2004, the Board authorized staff, working with and through the Cares and Shares Campaign Committee, to structure an orderly process to manage a program of annual charitable donations by County employees, and to report back to the Board with recommendations for such a program.

In August 2004, the Board approved a set of guidelines for the charitable giving campaign to serve the basis for consistent direction, authority, and future development of the annual giving campaign.  At that time, the Board also approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with United Way, Central California Region, to access their assistance for central processing of campaign contributions and their support in developing more interest and participation in the campaign on the Eastern Slope. Both the set of guidelines and the MOU remain in effect.

Additionally, as in past years, the Board is requested to inaugurate this year's giving campaign by adopting a Proclamation designating July 4, 2009 to July 17, 2009 (Pay Period 15) as the "Cares and Shares" Coordinated Giving Campaign period.

Thanks to Julianne Melchor of the Department of Transportation for her efforts to coordinate this year's Cares and Shares Coordinated Giving Campaign.

Action to be taken following Board approval:
The Committee will proceed with the 2009-10 campaign activities, as scheduled.
