DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND
The Sheriff's Office of Emergency Services has developed an informational map that residents can use to educate themselves as to potential evacuation routes out of their respective neighborhoods. The interactive map is designed for a resident to enter their address, then select a radius (5 miles, 10 miles, etc.), and a map will be produced showing color coded streets in their neighborhood, which will be the most capable routes to utilize from their address during an emergency. The color coding is based on the amount of traffic a road can handle per County DOT and CAL TRANS. When an actual emergency arises that requires evacuations, the Sheriff's Office of Emergency Services, in direct communication with the Incident Commander, will be utilizing the same information on this map to identify which evacuation routes are safest, and that information will be pushed out through CodeRED (the County's Reverse 9-1-1 Emergency notification provider) and social media. Having been previously educated as to what routes are in each neighborhood, residents will be able to evacuate quickly and safely.
