Title

Sheriff's Office recommending the Board approve and authorize the Sheriff to sign that State of California Board of State and Community Corrections (BSCC) Grant Project Agreement BSCC 0058-18-MH in the amount of $27,000 retroactive to the term of May 1, 2019 through September 30, 2020, to be used for mental health program training costs for corrections staff to be incurred in the first quarter of FY 2020-21.

FUNDING: Board of State and Community Corrections funds of $27,000.

Body

DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND

Given the state of mental health today, the Sheriff’s Office has begun researching ways to better equip staff when working with those who need mental health support.  During that research, it was discovered the Board of State Community Corrections (BSCC), through federal funding, is offering local sheriff’s offices, police departments, and probation agencies throughout the state funding for training costs for corrections personnel.

The funding is to be expended for new mental health training programs, meaning these funds cannot be used to cover costs for trainings Sheriff’s Office personnel currently attend.

The Sheriff’s Office has been awarded $27,000 that will be used to train corrections staff in the first quarter FY 2020-21.  These monies will be accounted for in the Sheriff’s FY 2020-21 budget.

It should be noted that while the term of this grant begins May 1, 2019, the costs that will be incurred under this grant agreement will take place in the first quarter of FY 2020-21.  No costs have been incurred to date.
