DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND

State Senator Brian Dahle (Dist. 1), a member of the Senate Committee on Transportation, introduced Senate Concurrent Resolution 89, which would create the "Deputy Sheriff Brian 'Ish' Ishmael Memorial Highway." The designation would apply to approximately two miles of State Route 50, between eastbound Exit 44A at Missouri Flat and the Ray Lawyer Drive overcrossing. The measure's coauthor is Assembly Member Frank Bigelow.

The highway naming would honor El Dorado County Deputy Sheriff Ishmael, who was killed in the line of duty October 23, 2019, while responding to a call about the theft of marijuana plants from what was later found to be an illegal marijuana grow. Deputy Ishmael, who was born and raised in El Dorado County, left behind his wife, Katie, their children Prudence, Zoey and Cash, his parents, a sister, and many friends.

Funding for the new signage would come entirely from private donations, so neither the State nor County would incur any associated costs.

If approved by the Senate Transportation Committee, and then by the Fiscal Committee and the entire State Senate, the Resolution will go to the State Assembly for approval. The Governor's signature is not necessary for a concurrent resolution.
