DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND:
President Bill Clinton issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the first full week in April 1995 as National Public Health Week. In his proclamation, he extolled the value of public health, saying that, “safe living and working environments, developing methods to immunize populations against infectious disease, maintaining good nutritional standards, and having good prenatal care for everyone are vital endeavors.”

For the past year, we have been physically distant from each other. Making communities safe and healthy is public health’s top priority. COVID-19 has made that even more important. Social media and virtual platforms make it easier than ever for us to connect, create, and take action. The 2021 theme “Building Bridges to Better Health,” is to prompt everyone to take advantage of technological advances to connect with each other and to available resources to improve everyone’s health.

The Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) encourages the citizens of El Dorado County to access the Public Health Division’s Well Dorado website (http://www.welldorado.org/) which provides a wealth of information in one accessible, user-friendly location. There, El Dorado County citizens can learn ways to improve their own and others’ lives by making healthy lifestyle choices. They can learn about the status of our community’s health and the activities that are in process to improve it, and can access resources like a healthy-eating recipe blog and a community events calendar.
