DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND
Law enforcement personnel nationwide overwhelmingly report that stress on the job has impacted their mental health. Suicides outnumber all combined line-of-duty deaths, and 90% of law enforcement personnel report that there is a stigma in law enforcement that creates a barrier to getting help for emotional or behavioral issues.
Since 2016, El Dorado Sheriff's Office (EDSO), the Probation Department, and District Attorney’s Office have had Agreement #712 and # 3754 with Cordico Psychological Corporation for pre-employment psychological evaluations, psychological testing, and Fitness for Duty evaluations. The County’s relationship with Cordico has been positive and long-term. Contracting with Cordico for their mobile wellness app as well will continue this productive relationship with an invaluable tool that positively impacts our law enforcement personnel in their personal and professional lives.
After researching local jurisdictions, we have found that most of them recommend the Cordico Inc., wellness app for any-time access, quality and range of wellness tools.
Cordico Inc., will develop a customized mobile wellness app for iPhone (iOS) and Android phones based on image files and contact information provided by the EDSO for use by deputies, dispatchers, and civilian staff. The app will contain a variety of content and features generally including nutrition, injury prevention, wellness self-assessment tools, work-life balance, stress management and response, suicide prevention, posttraumatic stress, and other personal and professional development services.
The importance of such an app cannot be understated given the conditions that law enforcement personnel face on a daily basis around our nation. As a pro-active measure by the EDSO, this subscription will provide the help necessary to enhance the well-being and provide support to our law enforcement personnel both on the job and at home.
Since Board Policy C-17 requires departments to obtain authorization from the Board of Supervisors to utilize any contract that does not have a stated contract term on an annual basis, the Sheriff’s Office is requesting that this contract with Cordico Inc. become a perpetual contract which will be brought back annually for authorization to renew and increase compensation as needed.
