DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND
The El Dorado County Railroad History Center and Park is a county museum satellite facility designed to highlight the significance of El Dorado County’s rich railroad history. Located along the Sacramento-Placerville Transportation Corridor (SPTC) in the town of El Dorado, the History Center and Park includes the Railroad History Center, Restroom, paved Class I bicycle trail as well as a park and playground slated to be developed this summer. This community asset is a collaborative effort between County Museum staff and volunteers whose purview is the Railroad History Center as well as Parks Division staff who are also overseeing the development and maintenance of the park amenities and playground which are scheduled to be added this summer.

In recent years, the Railroad History Center has been the target of increased vandalism which has included broken windows on the train, vandalism to the restrooms and several incidents of destructive graffiti. Museum volunteers have installed chain link fencing, in concert with Parks Division staff, and have purchased and installed $5,000 of solar lighting around a portion of the Railroad History Center. In light of recent vandalism, more security lighting and video surveillance is needed to.provide security to the exposed sections of train as well as the restroom facilities which currently serve the public utilizing the El Dorado Trail as well as the Railroad History Center.
