DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND:

H.R. 934 is legislation brought before Congress that outlines proper wildfire responses and would require the Secretary of Agriculture to carry out activities to suppress wildfire. Specifically, the legislation would force the U.S. Forest Service to suppress fires soon after ignition and discontinue a policy of allowing wildfire to burn. The language directs the use of all available resources to carry out wildfire suppression with the purpose of extinguishing wildfires detected not later than 24 hours after detection.

ALTERNATIVES: Wildfires may continue to lack required suppression efforts within 24 hours, which could lead to ongoing catastrophic wildfires in El Dorado County.
