DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND
On April 5, 2022, (item 22-0502) Supervisor Turnboo recommended the Board authorize the Chair to sign a letter of support for H.R. 6903 (McClintock and LaMalfa) regarding suppression of wildfires. The Board directed the CAO to draft a letter including input from the Office of Wildfire Prevention and Resilience (OWPR). The Board approved the letter, included as Attachment A, on April 19, 2022. The bill was not enacted into law.
On February 9, 2023, Congressman McClintock and Congressman LaMalfa introduced H.R. 934, which contained several of the same provisions as H.R. 6903. On April 11, 2023 (item 23-0707), Supervisor Turnboo recommended the Board direct staff to compose a letter of support for H.R. 934 and authorize the CAO to sign the letter of support. After discussion, a motion was made by Supervisor Thomas, seconded by Supervisor Turnboo to direct staff, in conjunction with the OWPR, to edit and amend the Board's April 19, 2022 letter to reflect OWPR's professional recommendations regarding H.R. 934 and return to the Board within 60 days for the Board to review. The letter is attached and will be submitted to Congressman McClintock upon approval of the Board of Supervisors.
