DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND
The Sheriff’s Office applied for and was awarded a grant on April 19, 2023, in the amount of $2,924,271 by BSCC with a grant period of May 1, 2023 through April 30, 2028. This grant is a continuation of funding to assist with law enforcement efforts addressing public health and safety associated with the implementation of the Control, Regulate and Tax Adult Use of Marijuana Act (AUMA), which was approved by the voters of California in November 2016. The Request for Proposal (RFP) from BSCC makes available $150 million through a competitive process for projects that address local impacts due to the legalization of cannabis in California. Activities and strategies must fall within four Project Purpose Areas: 1) Youth Development/Youth Prevention and Intervention; 2) Public Health; 3) Public Safety; and 4) Environmental Impacts.

To better serve the community, the Sheriff's Office pursued Prop 64 PH&S Grant funding for the purpose of: 1) hiring three (3) Deputy Sheriff’s to enforce illegal marijuana cultivation, manufacturing, and distribution laws, and 2) creating a Youth Citizens Academy.
