Title: Health Services Department recommending the Board authorize the Director of Health Services to submit a Letter of Intent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and, if invited to apply by CDC, a full application to host an apprentice in the CDC's Public Health Apprentice Program. Health Services Department recommending the Board authorize the Director of Health Services to submit a Letter of Intent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and, if invited to apply by CDC, a full application to host an apprentice in the CDC's Public Health Apprentice Program. Fiscal Impact/Change to Net County Cost:
There would be no Net County Cost associated with this apprenticeship program. Should El Dorado County be one of sixty (60) entities invited to submit a full application, and should that application be accepted, the CDC would place an apprentice to work within the Public Health Division for a period of two years. Salary, benefits, and other costs would be borne by the CDC. El Dorado County would host the apprentice at a Public Health work site and provide local direction, supervision, performance assessment, and on-the-job training. Available Public Health program funding and/or realignment would support these existing resources.

Background:
The Health Services Department has an opportunity to apply to host a Public Health Apprentice through the CDC's workforce development program. Apprenticeships consist of two, one-year job assignments suitable for candidates possessing a recent Bachelor’s degree. The assignments involve implementing public health interventions at the community level in areas including, but not limited to, communicable disease, chronic disease, public health preparedness, immunization, etc.
