DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND
The Department of Transportation, Maintenance and Operations Division (Transportation) worked with the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians Fire Department (Tribe Fire Department) regarding the Tribal Fire Department's interest in performing brush removal services within the county right-of-way. The Tribal Fire Department would like to contribute and give back to the community by providing volunteer brush removal services at no cost to Transportation.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was developed to allow the Tribal Fire Department and Transportation to work together to clear right-of-way along county-maintained roads countywide to enhance public safety. The Tribal Fire Department's offer for voluntary brush removal services within the community will aid in the backlog of many overgrown roads throughout the County and allow multiple brush removal projects to take place simultaneously.

ALTERNATIVES
The Board could choose not to approve the MOU, however, this would leave brush along many roads throughout the County untouched due to Transportation only having a three-person vegetation removal crew and limited contractor funds.
