Title: Human Services Department, on behalf of the El Dorado County Commission on Aging (COA), recommending the Board consider the following: 1) Adopt a proclamation designating May, 2010 as Older Americans Month in El Dorado County; 2) Present certificate to the nominees, noting their primary contribution to the community; 3) Announce the 2010 Senior of the Year; and 4) Present the perpetual trophy to the nominee selected by the COA to receive this honor.

2) Present certificate to the nominees, noting their primary contribution to the community;

Reason for Recommendation:
Annually the Federal Government declares the month of May as "Older Americans Month", and the State proclaims May as "Older Californians Month". The 2010 theme is “Age Strong! Live Long!”. The attached Proclamation designates May, 2010 as Older Americans Month in El Dorado County to pay tribute to the rapidly increasing older population in local communities and throughout the world, encourage older Americans to maintain their independence by accessing those support services available to them, and further encourage all businesses, public and private, schools, groups and citizens to celebrate our nation's senior citizens. A local celebration sponsored by the El Dorado County Area Agency on Aging and Commission on Aging is scheduled on May 19th at each Senior Nutrition mealsite. The proclamation declaring May as Older Americans Month in El Dorado County will be read at each site.

Every year, members of the public are invited to nominate a senior they believe has made a significant contribution to the local community to be considered for designation as Senior of the Year. A panel of Commission on Aging members reviews the nominations and awards this prestigious title to the nominee they believe, based on information presented in the nomination, best demonstrates selfless dedication to serving their fellow County residents and the community at large.
