Fiscal Impact/Change to Net County Cost: None. The Sheriff's FY2010-11 budget has appropriated funding for these services and will continue to budget for these services through FY2011/12.

Reason for Recommendation: The Sheriff's Coroner Division in Placerville and South Lake Tahoe has historically contracted for pathology services. William J. Gilles, M.D. of Placerville has provided general pathology services countywide for a number of years. This Agreement provides clinical autopsies, collecting toxicology, reviewing charts and general assistance to Coroner Detectives regarding Coroner cases.

On July 8, 2010, Dr. William Gilles submitted a letter to the Sheriff's Department indicating that he would no longer be able to perform coroner services for the County of El Dorado. In his letter, Dr. Gilles recommends his professional colleague Dr. Michael C. Berry M. D. as his replacement to cover coroner services for both the West Slope and the South Lake Tahoe area.

Upon receipt of this letter, the Sheriff's Department began the process of executing Amendment 1 to Agreement #804-S0911 so that Dr. Michael C. Berry can be available to provide this vital service. All terms and conditions of the original agreement remain in effect. The term of the original agreement is August 1, 2009 thru July 31, 2012. Compensation for the entire term is not to exceed $423,000.

Action to be taken following Board approval: The Chair will sign the Agreement.
