Body

DEPARTMENT RECOMMENDATION

Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) recommending the Board authorize the HHSA Director to sign a letter of support for American River College’s grant application titled, “Tech Hire Partnership Grants,” sponsored by the United States Department of Labor - Employment and Training Administration.  The grant program is designed to provide individuals with the skills needed to enable them to obtain well paying jobs in high tech industries.  HHSA, through its Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act program (WIOA), supports El Dorado County residents in obtaining the skills necessary to get and retain jobs.  American River College’s grant application is aligned with HHSA’s mission of “transforming lives and improving futures.”

DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND

In March 2015, President Barack Obama announced the Tech Hire initiative, which is a multi-sector approach to train workers with the information technology skills required for well-paying jobs in the high growth industry of information technology.  With the release of the “Tech Hire Partnership Grants,” sponsored by the United States Department of Labor - Employment and Training Administration, American River College, as the lead college in the Greater Sacramento region, will collaborate with Folsom Lake College, Cosumnes River College, Sacramento City College, and Sierra College.  This collaboration, along with the support of HHSA’s WIOA Program, will benefit our residents who desire to obtain the skills necessary to enter into the information technology fields.  HHSA supports American River College and the consortium of college partners, in preparing our residents to train, obtain, and retain employment in the information technology fields.
