DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND:
National Volunteer Week is an annual celebration observed in the United States to promote and show appreciation for volunteerism. In 1974, President Richard Nixon first established National Volunteer Week via Presidential Proclamation 4288, and every sitting U.S. President since that time has issued a proclamation during National Volunteer Week to recognize and celebrate the efforts of volunteers.
More than 400 volunteers in the Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) provide vital support to many Agency programs. Volunteer service in HHSA is provided across a wide spectrum of programs, and volunteers offer their assistance and skills by performing multiple services such as entertaining senior day care members, home delivery meal service for older adults, reassurance calls to older adults living alone, providing support to at-risk older adults, assisting at the Behavioral Health Wellness Center, exercising and socializing animals, cleaning shelter kennels, driving older adults to grocery shop and other social events, helping older adults understand and enroll in Medicare, providing support to Veterans, assisting with flu clinics, and receiving complaints regarding long term care facilities just to name a few. These volunteer services enhance existing services and make additional services available that otherwise may not be provided.
