DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND:
National Volunteer Week is an annual celebration observed in the United States to promote and show appreciation for volunteerism. In 1974, President Richard Nixon first established National Volunteer Week via Presidential Proclamation 4288, and every sitting U.S. President since that time has issued a proclamation during National Volunteer Week to recognize and celebrate the efforts of volunteers.
More than 600 volunteers in HHSA provide vital support to many Agency programs. Volunteer service in HHSA is provided across a wide spectrum of programs, and volunteers offer their assistance and skills by performing multiple services such as congregate and home delivered meal service to older adults, exercising and socializing shelter animals, assisting at the Behavioral Health Wellness Center, checking on the welfare of older adults living alone, assisting with flu clinics, receiving complaints regarding long term care facilities, and providing entertainment for Adult Day Service members. These volunteer services enhance existing services and make additional services available that otherwise may not be provided.
