DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND
President Gerald Ford declared November 3, 1974, through November 10, 1974, as the first “National Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week.” This annual observance continued for four more years. It was re-instituted by The American College of Emergency Physicians in 1982, which moved the observance of EMS Week from November to September. In 1992, the observance of EMS Week was moved to the third week in May.
National EMS Week brings together local communities and medical personnel to publicize safety and honor the dedication of those who provide the day-to-day lifesaving services of medicine's "front line." This year, the annual EMS Week will be celebrated throughout the Nation beginning May 18, 2025, through May 24, 2025.
