Supervisor Santiago recommending the Board adopt resolution 157-2014 declaring an ongoing emergency due to the actual and perceived threat of wildfire in California, that the state and local governments have taken many steps to resolve this issue, and now urges the Governor to take an active role at the federal level to demand that the United States Forest Service take action in California’s federal wild and forest lands to do the prevention and maintenance work required to mitigate the ongoing and increasing risk of catastrophic wildfires. Background
On July 22, 2014 the Sierra County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution declaring an ongoing emergency due to the actual and perceived threat of wildfire in California, and calling on both the state and federal governments to take immediate action in the proper management of forested lands. The Sierra County Board of Supervisors passed a second resolution asking the 22 Sierra Nevada counties to adopt a similar resolutions. The resolutions were sent to the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors.
Reason for Recommendation
The El Dorado County Board of Superviors has taken an increased interest in the health and producitive use of the forested lands located in the County. As the current King Fire has shown, the mismanagement of the forest poses a threat to the physical well-being of the citizens of El Dorado County, the economic prosperity of the region, and the watershed which provides 40% of California's water supply. Years of neglect and increased regulation by the state and federal governments has created an ongoing emergency due to the actual and perceived threat of wildfire in California.
