DEPARTMENT RECOMMENDATION:

The Health and Human Services Agency, Community Services Division (HHSA), is recommending that, in recognition of the many dedicated men and women who daily serve the residents and visitors of El Dorado County, the Board of Supervisors proclaim the week of May 20, 2018 through May 26, 2018 as “Emergency Medical Services Week” in the County of El Dorado.

In conjunction with this proclamation, the El Dorado County Emergency Services Authority (West Slope JPA) and the California Tahoe Emergency Services Operations Authority (CalTahoe JPA) will recognize EMS nominees for their outstanding contributions and dedication to their respective organizations.

DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND:

President Gerald Ford declared November 3, 1974 through November 10, 1974 as the first “National Emergency Medical Services Week.”  This annual observance continued for four more years.  It was re-instituted by The American College of Emergency Physicians in 1982, which moved the observance of EMS Week from November to September.  In 1992, the observance of EMS Week was moved to the third week in May.

National Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week brings together local communities and medical personnel to publicize safety and honor the dedication of those who provide the day-to-day lifesaving services of medicine's "front line."  This year, the annual EMS Week will be celebrated throughout the nation during May 20, 2018 through May 26, 2018 under the theme “EMS STRONG is Stronger Together.”

ALTERNATIVES:

The Board of Supervisors may elect to not adopt this Proclamation to recognize May 20, 2018 through May 26, 2018 as EMS Week.
