Supervisor Santiago recommending the Board receive a review of project history, and an update on current status with the City of South Lake Tahoe; and requesting input and possible action regarding next steps for the future of the 56-acre project also known as Lakeview Commons at the South Lake Tahoe-El Dorado County Recreational Area. (Refer 1/26/10, Item 21) (Est. Time: 30 Min.)
Body
Overview of Project: Successful design and construction of the El Dorado Beach area. Dedication on June 20, 2012. Next phases and funding.
Recently, discussion of (re)naming the project area has caused constructive debate within the community. Historically, the Washoe Tribe used this area in the meadow and along beach of Lake Tahoe as a place to gather; and as thoughtful members of the community provided years ago, it remains a public place to to camp and gather. As a gift to the community, the Washoe have offered the name "Tahnu Leweh"; a name that represents generations of indigenous peoples' use and the uses enjoyed today. This gift of a name has inspired conversations about replacing the temporary (2008) project name, Lakeview Commons.
What has become an even more important issue to discuss during the course of this community conversation is the future of the total 56-acre project.
The board will receive a narrative update on project successes, planning and funding projections; and, can provide input and possible direction on desired next steps.
