DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND:
The month of May has historically been named “Mental Health Awareness Month” both nationally and in the State of California. Since at least 2006, the County of El Dorado Board of Supervisors has adopted a proclamation naming May as “Mental Health Awareness Month.”
Mental Health is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as, “a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make contributions to his or her community.” Mental Health is critical to the well-being of El Dorado County families, communities, schools, and businesses. As the County continues to carry on with the recovery effort from the Caldor and Mosquito fires, it is important to take note of how the community has come together to take care of each other. There is no better time to recognize these efforts than during Mental Health Awareness Month.
ALTERNATIVES:
The Board could choose not to adopt this Proclamation recognizing May as "Mental Health Awareness Month.”
