DEPARTMENT RECOMMENDATION:
Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) recommending the Board accept the grant funding from Marshall Foundation for Community Health (Marshall) for costs related to HHSA hosting a four (4) hour community education program on “Insights into Dementia.”
DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND:
HHSA’s Community Services Adult Day Services Program is designed to meet the needs of adults who are homebound or isolated due to a stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, or other debilitating mental or physical conditions. The Adult Day Services Program provides its participants with enriching educational, therapeutic, and social experiences outside of the home, while providing caregivers with respite from the physical, mental, and emotional toll of being a caregiver.
The Alzheimer’s Association noted that in 2015, more than 15 million Americans provided an estimated 18.1 billion hours of unpaid care to people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. That care had an estimated economic value of $221.3 billion. Family caregivers of people with dementia are often called the invisible second patient because of the potential negative health effects from the stresses associated with caregiving. Educational workshops offered by HHSA’s Adult Day Services Program enable caregivers to understand the effects of the dementia on a person’s brain function and behavior, as well as provide caregivers with strategies for understanding and managing associated behaviors. Educational programs also provide valuable self-care tips for caregivers.
The workshop planned in El Dorado Hills will be an educational workshop and a question and answer session with dementia-care professionals. The Marshall Foundation for Community Health grant will be used to pay for presenter’s honorarium, printing costs and other incidental supplies. Marshall Foundation for Community Health only provided a grant application and grant acceptance letter; there is no grant/funding contract.
ALTERNATIVES:
The Board of Supervisors could elect to not accept this grant award.
